Afterschool Express - Field Trips!

These last 2 weeks have been full of amazing field trips.  My goal is to take the children on at least 1 field trip each week.  Some of these trips are more exciting than others.  The library or pet store (to buy dog food and look at the animals) often count as a "field trip" as I connect them to reading and writing activities. For example, if you go to the farm, you could do activities like these to enhance your children's learning experiences. This week, we were able to visit an authentic working farm comprised of 18 restored buildings during their annual cane boil. Here is a short video of the grinding or pressing of the sugar cane.  Afterwards it is boiled  down in large vats on the fire until it is a thick syrup.

We helped pump water for the horses.
And used a rope braiding tool to make thin twine into a stronger rope for use on the farm.

Elliana has shown a huge interest in making yarn and asked many thoughtful questions while watching a spinning demonstration. To extend this field trip, we are going to be making a little cookbook with recipes using cane syrup over break.  I'm thinking of home-made breads and french toast.  If you have any great ideas for cane syrup - please let me know!

Need some field trip ideas?
Take a train ride
Explore a new city
Stop by a zoo
Head towards the water

Do you have any field trip plans while the kids are home during the holiday break???
Feel free to link up these trips and learning activities that you are doing with your grade school children!!!

  1. My kids love field trips! We try to do something fun on Friday afternoons and it's usually some type of field trip. I love your suggestions and thanks for the blog mention.

One we just did was to visit a historic inn that has gingerbread houses on display and beautiful Christmas decorations. It was free and the kids loved it!

  2. Thanks so much for including a link to our trip to Hersheypark! You have a lot of other good ideas here too. We're taking a trip to Ocean City, MD, over the holidays so I guess that will be our "field trip"! I also hope to make it to at least one museum - hopefully the local Museum of Art.

  3. Little Wonders' Days - The gingerbread houses sound delightful! I bet it was great to see different people's spin on a gingerbread house and that is was hard to resist eating them!

Julie - sounds like a MAJOR field trip for you. Enjoy =) I like to stop by local museums and zoos when we visit new places too. A friend of mine made it a goal to visit each state with her kids by the time they graduated HS. They couldn't just drive through the state, they had to attend a sporting event and a museum for the state to be counted as visited.

  4. What a fun outing! I love Eliana's dress!

My kids only get a total of six days off between Christmas and Easter, not much time! We may go out and do something fun, though, depending on the weather.

Thanks for linking over to our Montreal post!

  12. Hi there, your linky link caught my eye over on It's Playtime as I am from a family full of cane-farmers here in QLD, Australia.
To follow up from that experience, you might like to track down a book called "Sticky Jam" which goes through the "where does sugar/jam come from" process in kid-friendly language. It is a little repetitive though. :S Anyway, check out my blog http://the-pre-school-room.blogspot.com/

    "Jemima" :)
